How to Know When to Get an STD Test
When it comes to protecting your sexual health, knowledge is power. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) often show little to no symptoms—meaning many people may unknowingly pass infections to their partners or live with long-term complications.
At Novus, we believe STD testing is one of the most important tools in staying healthy, confident, and in control. If you’re wondering whether it’s time to get tested, here are five key signs that say “yes.”
1. You’ve Had Unprotected Sex
Any time you have sex without using a condom or other barrier method, there’s a risk of transmitting or contracting an STD—even if neither you nor your partner shows symptoms. This includes vaginal, oral, and anal sex. If protection wasn’t used, or if a condom broke, it’s a good idea to schedule a test.
2. You’re Starting a New Relationship
Before you and a new partner choose to stop using protection, get tested together. It’s an empowering way to build trust, set boundaries, and ensure both of you are on the same page when it comes to sexual health. Even if you feel fine, many STDs can remain undetected without testing.
3. You’re Experiencing Unusual Symptoms
While many STDs are asymptomatic, certain symptoms can be red flags. These include:
- Burning or pain during urination
- Unusual discharge
- Sores, bumps, or rashes in the genital or oral area
- Itching or discomfort
- Pelvic pain
If anything feels off, listen to your body—it could be time to get checked.
4. You’ve Had a Partner Who Tested Positive
If someone you’ve been sexually active with tells you they’ve tested positive for an STD, it’s important to get tested—even if you don’t have symptoms. Early detection is key for effective treatment and preventing further spread.
5. It’s Been a While Since Your Last Test
Routine STD testing is part of a healthy lifestyle. If you’re sexually active and it’s been more than a year since your last test—or you’ve never been tested—it’s time. Regular testing is crucial if you have multiple partners or your relationship status has changed.
