Understanding Hepatitis: What You Need to Know

May 13, 2025

Hepatitis is a term for inflammation of the liver, often caused by a viral infection. Though common, Hepatitis can be misunderstood and stigmatized, leading many people to delay testing or treatment.

At Novus, we believe that knowledge is power, and we’re here to break down the basics so you can feel informed, empowered, and supported.

What Is Hepatitis?

There are several types of hepatitis, but the three most common forms are:

  • Hepatitis A – Typically spread through contaminated food or water. This form is short-term (acute) and usually resolves on its own, though vaccination is available.
  • Hepatitis B – Transmitted through blood, sexual contact, or from parent to child during childbirth. This virus can cause both acute and chronic infection. A vaccine is available and highly effective.
  • Hepatitis C – Mostly spread through blood-to-blood contact, such as sharing needles or non-sterile tattoo equipment. It can lead to chronic liver disease, but is now curable with treatment.

Why Hepatitis Matters

Hepatitis can quietly damage the liver over time, especially if left undiagnosed. Chronic infections may lead to serious complications like liver cirrhosis, cancer, or even liver failure. Many people don’t experience symptoms for years, making regular testing an essential part of protecting your health.

Hepatitis Symptoms to Watch For

Though hepatitis often has no symptoms early on, some people may experience:

  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Dark urine
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite

If you’re experiencing any of these, getting tested is a good idea, especially if you have risk factors.

How Is Hepatitis Diagnosed?

A simple blood test can detect hepatitis viruses and determine the type of infection. At Novus, our team provides fast, judgment-free testing in a supportive environment.

Hepatitis Prevention & Treatment

  • Vaccination: Safe and effective vaccines are available for Hepatitis A and B.
  • Safe Practices: Using barrier protection during sex, not sharing needles or personal hygiene items (like razors), and ensuring sterile conditions during tattoos or piercings can all reduce risk.
  • Treatment: Hepatitis C is now curable with oral antiviral medications. Hepatitis B can be managed with long-term treatment and monitoring.
