A Guide to Routine Testing from Novus

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are common, often manageable, and highly treatable when caught early. Regular testing is one of the most important steps you can take to stay in control of your sexual health, for yourself and your partners.

At Novus, we offer confidential and inclusive STD testing services throughout Pennsylvania in a supportive environment, empowering you to stay informed and in control of your health.

Why STD Testing Matters

Many STDs show no symptoms at all. That means you could carry or transmit an infection without knowing it. Regular screening helps:

  • Detect infections early so you can start treatment
  • Prevent long-term complications
  • Reduce the risk of transmission to others
  • Empower you to make informed decisions about your health

How Often Should You Get Tested?

The frequency of STD testing depends on several factors, including your sexual practices, relationship status, and health history. Here are general guidelines, but it’s always best to talk to a healthcare provider about what’s right for you.

If You’re Sexually Active

  • At least once a year, for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea
  • More frequent testing (every 3–6 months) is recommended if you:
    • Have multiple partners
    • Have sex with new partners
    • Have anonymous partners
    • Use substances during sex
    • Don’t consistently use protection
    • Are part of a community disproportionately impacted by STDs

If You’re Living with HIV

  • Regular screening for other STDs is recommended at least annually, or more often, depending on your activity.

If You’re Using PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)

  • You should get tested for HIV and other STDs every 3 months.

What Tests Should I Get?

Common STD tests include screening for:

  • HIV
  • Syphilis
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Hepatitis A, B, and C
  • Herpes

Your provider may recommend additional testing based on your medical history and risk factors.
